How can you get more profits from your hosting business?

If you are already running a website hosting business, you are very much aware with the challenges you faced in the business. Ample of competitors are just a click away, ready to undercut your price.

Probable customers see hosting as a commodity and shop by price.

Here I am just briefing you very basic but definite points to get More Profits in Your Website Hosting Business.

FIRST, GET THE CUSTOMER

Calculate the lifetime value of your customer.

If a visitor comes to your website, then leaves to comparison shop, you have more than likely lost that sale. Have you invested in sales copy that compels your visitors to buy from you? Does your website help him to see that you are the best choice for his situation? Showcase your credibility, guarantee services and offer incentives to try your service. Make it easy to buy from you.

NEXT, KEEP THE CUSTOMER

Because each customer is hard-won and the value of the customer is so high, you’ll want to make sure you have the support services that keep your customers happy.

Once a customer leaves you for another website host, he’s gone forever. You probably already make customer service a priority, with email answered in a timely fashion and well-trained technical support. Go the extra mile. Don’t wait for customers to contact you. Ask your customer how you’re doing.

THEN, SELL MORE TO THE CUSTOMER

The customer has already bought from you. There is familiarity and trust. You can easily offer complimentary items to your current customer list.

The major concern of your customer is how to succeed online. It’s easy to offer online marketing tools, ebooks and additional services. It can be as simple as joining an affiliate program for an item your customer may need, then making him aware of the item.

Focus on these 3 areas, getting the customer, keeping the customer and selling more to him. You’ll enjoy higher profits in your website hosting business.

Do you know a thumb rule says, to be build “big things” certainly you needed a solid platform. That was the first decade of the Web Hosting Industry. And the second one is Web Hosting was full of applications that were finding new online platforms, with the traffic more shifted. This is the last 10 year history of Web Hosting Industry.

Meanwhile in that time commerce, content and communications establish their abode on the Web. The shopping cart becomes the essence of any online commerce business, but now many a day’s many small traders (and some large ones) are still using third party platform like Amazon, Yahoo! or eBay to sell their wares. The companies mention above is not only providing the transaction, but also they bring what is more important for any business module: the leads, enquires, or you can say The Customers. Fact is very clear on the hosted stores from Amazon, Yahoo! or eBay is instant access to n number of customers from the globe.

Everything is outscored, event the function of search build on many websites. There are only a few larger sites that need to implement their own search, mostly use Google.

The email is also an outscored function, let me put an example in front of you, suppose who does not use Google’s Gmail or Yahoo!’s Mail, were accounts are made for free and you have a lager than 1 GB of storage. Think about how many Web Hosting offers provide you with 1 GB per user, even for a fee? So if all of the applications are moving out of the Web hosting data center, what’s a Web host to do to? What can you continue to offer your customers? And in what rate? Think and think seriously!

A company whosoever is in any application development or service provider business models that were formerly hosted on one’s own server.

So, you see, all the applications are moving out of Web Hosting data center. And what you can do Web host?

For sure, here comes the answer: “value migrates to closest layers” particular for this case that value migrates to services. The Web Hosting vendors are building strong businesses to survive though time.

By the constant changing nature of the internet, the services that embrace, instead of compete with, the migration of services away from the Web Hosting data center are the most important. Clients that are helped to migrate on gmail, or other large companies like Amazon, eBay or Yahoo!, will represent the major step to a progressive Web Hosting Provider.

But the migration process is not easy, generally it’s a hectic hob to do and headache for clients it need a better plan of action, so you have to help your clients by offering them free toolkits and libraries in order to assist them for migration or you can take a charge for this whole migration process and can charge some minimal amount.

And that will be the future of The Web Hosting Industry.

I have written more often for the hosting services and about the providers. If you will follow these bits of advice I am dam sure you will find a reliable, affordable hosting company that is best for your online business. If nothing else, you could give my hosting company www.seoworkgroup.com a look and compare it to other companies about the plans, rates, quality and reliability. Whatever company you decide to go with, I wish you the all the best. Before taking any decision just read the checklist carefully.

A good web hosting company, that contributes a huge role to make your online business successful, isn’t easy to find in these days. Literally there are n numbers of web hosting companies and plans are available to choose, they all offering different mixture of space, bandwidth, free add on (such as databases, asp, php, cgi, free scripts), and technical customer support. Some companies attract their customers with extremely low prices for the web space and bandwidth. In return, mostly customers get frustrated with the down time of the sites and mails and also by the unavailability of the technical customer support, of these extremely low-priced companies. The hosting business is like, you usually get what you pay for.

So how do you find out the web hosting company that’s right for your website? Having been in the hosting business for several years, I’ve often had friends and known persons ask me, in so many words, this very question. I incessantly suggest that they’ll have to simply write out what they think their website (whether for a company or personal) will need first of all. Will site will be static (html pages) or the dynamic (database driven)? If yes, what kind of database do they want, MSSQL, MySQL or something else? Likewise, do they need support for .NET 1.1 or 2.0, PHP, CGI, ASP, or some other programming language? How many POP/SMTP accounts they want? Also think about exactly how much space your website is going to need. The same thing goes for bandwidth, or transfer. You want to secure enough space and bandwidth now so that you do not have to switch hosting provider, or pay any premium for extra usage services, in the future. These questions can be very important. On the topic of bandwidth and storage space, this is where planning really comes into play; know how much space and bandwidth you will need before you want to book a space for your website.

Mostly hosting companies, big and small, are offering 24/7 technical and customer support these days. Be very weary of these claims, most companies that claim 24/7 support doesn’t really live up to expectations. In addition, a toll free number does not guarantee that someone will actually answer to your phone call, or even it will be helpful. Look for a company that has a good, honest support structure and history set up with a variety of support options: support tickets, live support chat, e-mail support, and perhaps phone support as well. My own web hosting company, for instance, has everything but tickets support, and personally for local customers I prefer a phone support is the one of the fastest want to help your customers in nice manner. We are still capable of answering inquiries within minutes. If you are considering a particular web host, the best thing you can do to evaluate their support is simply send them an e-mail or open a support ticket and see how long it takes them to respond to your inquiry. If it takes more than 24 hours, that’s probably a bad sign.

In order to corroborate the credibility of your potential web hosting company, I’ll prefer to look for some type of customer testimonials on their websites. If they list the customer’s website or e-mail address, go the extra step and contact at least one of the customers, even you can directly call to the hosting company and can ask any of the customers phone no. for feedback. They will be able to confirm that they are real customers and let you know about their experiences with the given company. If they have no testimonials, or the testimonial listings do not contain a means of contacting the customers, do a search on the company using a big search engine like Google and Yahoo!. Look for forums and other webpages that may contain customer feedback about your company. Many times, customers that have either had a very bad or very good experience with a hosting company will go onto at least one webmaster forum and tell others about their experience. Looking up these comments is a good way to get a third-party assessment of a particular hosting company. Ask me anything if you want to know something else.

I know number of companies and freelancers running a web hosting business in small or large indistinct shapes. Some are having good amount of dedicated or VPS servers and some are serving to their clients from the reseller hosting accounts (already explained in my earlier post)

Whom so ever is running a website hosting business, very much aware about all the challenges in the business? Several competitors are available in a click, ready to undercut your price.

Now most customers understand hosting business model very well, they now well that in these days this business as a commodity and shop by price. Several websites, directories, PPC adds, and many ways are available to make it easy to comparison shop.

Now must bubbling question in your mind is how can you get more profits from your hosting business under in these circumstances?

[A] GET THE CUSTOMER

First of all let me tell you one thing very straight a client who is having the minimum space with you and paying very negligible cost to you per month is value for your business calculate the lifetime value of your customer. The best thing with the hosting business is, it’s a recurring piece for you, until client is really not unhappy with your service believe me he is not going to move from your server to anywhere all though moving from one server to another is also not very enjoyable moment. Let’s calculate things with one example, let’s say the average customer takes minimum space slot with you and pays 58-60 Rs. per month. That means their one year value to your company is is near about 700 Rs. So every customer you acquire makes your business (on average) 700 Rs.

[B] HOLD YOUR CUSTOMER’S

Because each customer is hard-won and the value of the customer is so high, you’ll want to make sure you have the support services that keep your customers happy.

Once a customer leaves you for another website host, he’s gone forever. You probably already make customer service a priority, with email answered in a timely fashion and well-trained technical support. Go the extra mile. Don’t wait for customers to contact you. Ask your customer how you’re doing.

[C] UPGRADE YOUR SELL FOR THE EXISTING CUSTOMER EASILY

The customer has already bought from you. There is familiarity and trust. You can easily offer complimentary items to your current customer list.

The major concern of your customer is how to succeed online and generate revenues from the websites. It’s easy to offer online marketing tips and tools, ebooks and additional services. Once he’ll show some interest on it and not finding very comfortable himself for all of that, he’ll get back you to hire these services from you. It can be as simple as joining an affiliate program for an item your customer may need, then making him aware of the item.

Let me know in case of if you are looking answer for some other questions in same subject.

As I already shared, Space, Bandwidth, & Support System plays very important role in any web hosting, in my previous articles;

http://akashdwivedi.com/blog/index.php/2009/reseller-web-hosting

http://akashdwivedi.com/blog/index.php/2009/virtual-private-servers-vps

In all mentioned points above the quality of the bandwidth is as important then the hardware your site runs on. And this is because even your web site is in best ever web server, your site will upload slow in web if it’s connected to poor quality bandwidth. And the solution is for that to think about dedicated or VPS servers.

If you’re reading this article, you might be interested in getting a dedicated or VPS server, or simply learning more about dedicated or VPS hosting services.

First of all, please note, that a dedicated server is rather expensive service, and you shouldn’t waste your money if you don’t plan to use it in full measure.

But if you really have any sensitive website, and want to run a successful business – you cannot do it without a dedicated or VPS server.

Of course explorer the word before making any decision, so let’s enumerate the facts for Dedicated or VPS servers.

Power and functionality:

With a dedicated server you get on average 50-100 Gb of hard drive, plus about 1,000 Gb of data transfer. You may customize the configuration and choose any CPU, RAM, or whatever you need. A dedicated server reduces your dependency on the web host; and bypasses time delays and possible expenses incurred from these.

Freedom and security:

Dedicated or VPS server will give you a freedom. You will not need to share it with other websites. It will also give you additional 3rd party security for your site and emails. A dedicated server will allow you deep access to your server to configure and optimize your server anyway you need. You’re able to choose the software to install.

Respectability:

You simply CAN NOT run a popular website on a shared hosting. It’s not serious.

Summary:

If your website turned into a popular and reliable resource; if you have tons of daily visitors; if you work B2B; if you need additional security and functionality, power and freedom – go ahead and buy a dedicated server. Don’t be sorry about the money you spent! Think about the future!

So what does this all mean if you are looking for a company to host your website?

You need to have your website hosted by a company that follows these checklist and technologies. These all are very necessary for the effective and efficient functioning of your website. It will bring certainty to the process of communicating on the Internet — a peace of mind that your website has the redundancy and bandwidth needed to stay online 24/7.

Additionally, dedicated or VPS servers will allow your customers to experience, reliable and fast services that maximize the performance of your business.

How many times you did this? I think at least one time when you was get frustrated with your hosting provider, am I right? Was it a easy job for you? Have you faced any downtime in your websites or in mail? If YES then you’ll have to only do some planning, to moving your domain from previous hosting company to a new hosting company without any headache. I am just providing some very basic checklist to avoid the downtime for your website, that will be in steps as mention below:

Purchase your new hosting slot from the new hosting company

Set up your new hosting account for your web, mail and DB with the help of IP address

Upload your web content through the help of the live IP address in your web (through FTP)

Upload your DB through the help of the live IP address in your MSSQL or MYSQL (front end)

Backup or download your all mail if you are using web interface for your email communication (if not using outlook)

Also try to get the IP address for your email POP and SMTP, it will allow you to get your mail when the Name Server updating will be in progress.

Now you are on with your complete hosting in new server

If needed, transfer your domain

Change your domain’s Name Servers from old to new one

Once everything will be fine with your new hosting account, Cancel your old hosting account

The first step is to purchase new hosting space from any new hosting provider, try to evaluate that geographically both hosting provider should from one place not mandatory, that will help you to make your site live early as compare to others. Set up a new hosting account for your all services you are using with your current provider. Upload our all contents, take some help from your service provider in case of any problems. Make sure you upload all your files to the new site before making any changes on. These all steps will take few hours from your side.

The second step is to transfer your domain to a new registrar (If needed) and changing the Name Server records. I personally recomend if your registrar and your new hosting provider can help you in this matter. If you are going to change your registrar it will take couple of days to transfer the domain from one registrar to another, and if you are only changing the Name Server records for the domain will take 24 to 48 hours for complete redirection.

Last but not least, don’t forget to cancel your previous web hosting with your old web hosting provider otherwise it will cause some un proper behavior in your website.

Are you facing huge down time with your current web hosting provider? Switched from one web hosting provider to another n numerous occasions. Are you paying huge amount to your web hosting provider for shred web hosting? Might consider many times, you can bare a dedicated server (Not Shared Hosting) for you in the same cost. Do you have the ambition and man power to control and manage your own web server? Let me tell you one thing this is not going to be an easy job for you.

If your answer is ‘yes and you want to host your web server in your own control’, then you may check the price list from various providers about the dedicated web server. If you are a company who is having 10-20 domains for the business or you have a portal as compare to 20 static websites than no need to waste your money in dedicated server hosting, evaluate a VPS (Virtual Private Server) performance for your business. If your requirement is not huge or dynamic VPS can server you in such as manner you are assuming and in cheaper cost even.

When prepared for your own web server you should be technically inclined and must have basic knowledge of operating systems, for better understanding the technical terms, As;

- How to setup a server environment (DNS, IIS, Apache, etc)

- How to setup a mail server environment (MDAEMON, IMAIL, POSTFIX etc)

- Have basic knowledge of database and scripting (PHP, PERL, JAVA, MSSQL, MYSQL, etc)

- Be familiar with running technologies (.NET, JOOMLA, etc)

- Have a basic understanding of hardware and server components (FIREWALL, SPAM WALL, etc)

Mention below pros and cons will give you clear idea about to host a own web server.

Pros :

- Entire responsibility will be yours.

- You’ll have to not pay any monthly hosting fees/accounts.

- You can host unlimited websites, mail accounts, databases, etc.

- The dedicated server will be completely belongs to you (Non-shared environment)

- You should be more aware for the monitoring and all more bandwidth.

- No more waiting on someone else time.

- Incompetence no longer exists.

- Complete control in your hand.

Cons :

- No technical support team.

- Exhausting at times.

- Faced with server/hardware problems.

- ISP business account (monthly business/broadband expense).

- If server goes down then the website is offline.

- Software, hardware, and network expenses.

Now as mentioned above that a VPS can also serve to you for your purpose. VPS (Virtual Private Server), also referred to as Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS), provides the platform, RD (Remote Desktop) and features of a dedicated server for the customers to share multiple web hosting. At first look it will sound opposing, how can you have a dedicated server if it is being shared by multiple users? Isn’t that a regular shared or virtual hosting environment? It is true that with a VPS you can share system resources like the CPU and RAM with other users but the resources are allocated in such a way that you cannot complain that the system has anyone else sharing with you, much like a dedicated server. So hardware are usually setup in such a way that each VPS client is only allowed to use an allocated percent of DISK, CPU, RAM and bandwidth meaning that you will get the resources always assigned to you.

Advantages of Virtual Private Server (VPS) web hosting:

Most dedicated hosting users would rather have complete control of their server. They don’t like to be hosted on a server where already hundreds of other users are present and using the same resource and cause the server environment to be unstable in any terms. In other way the Virtual Private Server (VPS) is a very attractive dedicated hosting solution for large web hosting clients who would like the stability of a dedicated server but on cheaper rates. As already mentioned above, that resources setup is done in such a way that each person can only use what belongs to them, your site will be more consistent because it will always have the same amount of access to the DISK, CPU, RAM and bandwidth. Virtual Private Servers are also more secure in case If a website on the server is hacked, the hackers will not able to access particular file system and would not harm the other websites. A VPS is also much cheaper than a dedicated server.

Disadvantages of Virtual Private Server (VPS) web hosting:

Well, almost – as is the case with every other type of hosting service, not all providers setup or define Virtual Private Servers, also known as Virtual Dedicated Servers, the exact same way. You must make sure that your provider guarantees that their setup is robust enough to handle operations at any circumstances of failure. A trick used by many providers in the reselling and shared space is ‘overselling’. What this means is selling more in terms of services than what physically available, with the hope that the end users wouldn’t use up all the service that were advertised to them. In the VPS setup this can be a bit more serious, since at least the expectation is that you are operating in a more robust environment and many clients could be running more intensive applications like message boards or custom web applications. A shortfall of resources could end up causing problems for everyone hosted on such a server, therefore negating the benefits of a VPS. In a shared or dedicated environment you might be able to access more resources during peak or spike periods but since the VPS environment limits you to your slice of the server resources, it can be a drawback.
Apart from storage space and bandwidth you must also deal with CPU cycles and RAM. It is somewhat harder to figure out how much CPU time or RAM you might need, so seek out a Dedicated or VPS hosting provider that will provide you with some benchmarks and the ability to upgrade or downgrade the VPS service if needed.

Conclusion:

VPS allows complete control of your resources.
VPS allows you to run web applications without affecting anyone else.
VPS is cheaper than dedicated hosting, expensive than shared.

So you want to start your own blog site do you?

Welcome to the club, do a free blog setup from word press blog or blogger most known name in web world for the free blog setups. These days it seems that almost everyone has a web site of some kind, and many more on way to be launched every day. After launching site what next? People whom so ever are having website has start put own articles (BLOG) what so ever he experienced till date in his area of capabilities. In It’s challenging enough to design a site and update it in very regular interval with interesting content for readers, but when all is set and done another challenge comes in front of – where to do Web Hosting?

A popular choice for numbers of webmasters, and even experienced ones, is to hire a free hosting plan with a company, those are already has international brand for web hosting such as Yahoo! Rediff, Geocities, Tripod and many more. We all know these are easy to setup and free to use, but they do have restrictions. Maximum free hosters don’t offer all useful features that paid web hosting service provider do such as FTP access, POP-SMTP, or your own personal domain name. Instead of that you’re jammed with minimal features and a generic URL such as www.freeyourwebsitehosting.com/yourdomainname. Here you are making a mistake, your are losing your website’s potential. Either free hosters require you to run banners or pop-up ads on your web site or they will exchange some cross links from your website to make it worth their while for an expensive service what you are getting absolutely free. All these banners, pop-ups and link exchange can prevent the user to view of your web page and ultimately this irritation will drive them visitors away from your website. Lastly, most free hosters have a daily restriction in the terms of bandwidth usage, upload-download usage, sending receiving mails, so if suppose your websites attracts lot of traffic you’ll exceed your allotted quota and your website will be temporarily disabled. Overall I would recommend free web hosters for only those people that are new to web hosting and want to experience something that how it works. I’d also recommend them for web sites that is going to only informative web sites and don’t plan to produce any revenue from it host with free hosters, but if a web sites that is although is the individual property and personal in nature as well as web sites going produce huge amount of revenues from it don’t host with free web hosters.

Now seriously think and move towards the better side – paid web hosting. Web hosting companies that charge money for their verity of services are on the Internet, and feature a wide collection of hosting packages at various price segments. Let’s begin with so called “budget” The web hosters, who claim to offer you the world for only $1 per month. Having used numerous such companies I feel I must tell you to proceed with caution here, as these companies aren’t all that they are cracked up to be. Many claim to offer 24/7 e-mail support, which in my experience turned out to be 0/0 e-mail support. My e-mails were either never answered or answered a week after I sent them. Even when I got a response it was generic in nature and completely unhelpful. Also, expect frequent outages with these budget web hosts as they rarely even have their own web servers – often they are reselling space on someone else’s web servers over which they have no control. One budget web host I used went down unexpectedly for 6 days, and they didn’t even bother to notify their customers. As a result, my web site was down for 6 days and I lost most of my visitors as well as my hard-earned search engine rankings. Lesson learned: if the reliability and success of your web site is important to you, budget web hosting might not be the answer. However, this is not to say that all budget web hosters are bad – 1dollarhosting.com is one of the leaders in the budget web hosting arena and has quite a good reputation.

Blogging is an reduction of “web-logging”. The simplest definition of a blog is that it is an online log that is organized in reverse chronological order. It comprises of comments, declarations, links, or anything else of interest to the blog writers.

You’ll have to only keep two things in mind,

Basic requirements of starting your own blog.

You need software to run a blog and a place on the Internet to host your blog.

Taking into consideration the above mentioned two factors, there can be four categories of blogs:

1. Free Webhosting + Free Software
2. Paid Webhosting + Free Software
3. Paid Webhosting including Price of Software
4. Paid Webhosting + Paid Software

Descriptions for all four options along with their pros and cons are here;

We have also given recommendations regarding the suitability of these options.

1. Free Webhosting + Free Software

Here you pay neither for the software nor for the website hosting. This is a completely free way of blogging

But there are some drawbacks of this system. It offers very few features as compared to the paid services. You cannot post pictures online or design your preferred look for your site.

The companies that provide free software and free domain hosting frequently place a banner immediately above your site. This detracts the visitors from the look of your site. You also have no discretion over the content of the advertisements.

The key advantage of this system is that it is absolutely free. This option is extremely useful for a newcomer who would not like to pay anything, since he/she can try this method to find if they are really interested in blogging.

2. Free Software + Paid Webhosting

This option provides you free software but you will have to pay for the domain hosting.

There is a cost factor involved in this option. Minimum cost of hosting would be INR700-1100 & $14-20 per year. The annual registration fee for domain name would be INR450 & $9 per year for (.com, .co.in, .net domains).

This system will let you do certain things that you were unable to do with the free one. Here, you can modify the look of your site and you can also post pictures. But free software’s have fewer features than paid ones.

This option is highly recommended because by just paying the cost of virtual hosting and domain registration, you can avail great features and flexibility.

3. Paid Webhosting including Price of Software

This is a subscription-based option. There are ongoing costs involved in this option.

Apart from customizing the look of your site and posting photographs online, you will be able to use a software that provides more features than a free one.

This option is recommended for people who do not want to be troubled with virtual hosting and software installation issues. This is the easiest possible solution. It offers great features but at a reasonably high price.

4. Paid Webhosting + Paid Software

This option provides you paid software and paid domain hosting.

The cost of the domain hosting ranges from $5 to $10 per month while the cost of the software would be at least $45-100$ (one-time cost).

This option gives you great amount of flexibility. You can select your own domain name and have feature-rich blogging software.

This option is highly recommended for businesses since the cost is not a major consideration.
